Asthma Tidal Volume

Q.

When a person is breathing normally, 500 ml of air move into the lungs with each breath.  An asthma attack causes a person’s airways (bronchi) to narrow and only 300 ml of air move into the lungs with each breath.

a) Explain how narrowed airways cause less air to move into the lungs during an asthma attack.

b) During an asthma attack, you will see a person expand their chest more than normal in an effort to bring in a normal amount of air (500 ml) with each breath.  Explain how this technique will help the person bring in a normal amount of air.
